With your BitTorrent addiction in full swing, you've filled hard drives with media but can't seem to figure out how to burn any of the videos you downloaded to a DVD. Sound familiar? It's a common problem, and there was a time that it didn't have many simple (or free) solutions. Luckily that's no longer the case, and today we're taking a look at two dead simple solutions for burning virtually any video to a DVD you can pop into your DVD player and enjoy.

DVD Flick

First and foremost, there's DVD Flick, a free, open-source application that supports over 45 different file formats, includes subtitle support, and makes creating a DVD from most common (and even uncommon) video files a breeze. I detailed how to burn almost any video file to a playable DVD with DVD Flick almost two years ago now, but the app is better than ever. Since I last wrote it up, DVD Flick has added support for creating custom menu screens and has pushed out a load of bug fixes.

Free DVD Creator

If DVD Flick isn't your thing, then check out Free DVD Creator. It's not open source like DVD Flick (we do love our FOSS), but it's still free, and it offers most of the same features as DVD Flick.

Also like DVD Flick, the Free DVD Creator wizard is dead simple to use. First select the movies you want to burn and arrange them in the order you'd like them to playback and appear on the DVD menu. On the next screen, you can completely customize your DVD menu screen. Once you've made it that far, just start burning. Free DVD Creator (like DVD Flick) will handle all of the file conversions necessary, then write the DVD-ready video to a DVD complete with your custom menu.

If you have trouble with the one step convert-and-burn (when I tested it, Free DVD Creator created the DVD but didn't immediately burn), just re-open Free DVD Creator and this time select Video DVD Burner instead of Create Video DVD. Then just point the Burner at the VIDEO_TS folder that Free DVD Creator made the first time around (by default it's located at C:\DVDTemp\ and hit Burn. That worked for me without a hitch.

That password-protected site of yours - it ain't

It's one of the simplest hacks we've seen in a long time, and the more elite computer users have known about it for a while, but it's still kinda cool and just a little bit unnerving: A hacker has revealed a way to use Google and other search engines to gain unauthorized access to password-protected content on a dizzying number of websites.

While plenty of webmasters require their visitors to register or pay a fee before viewing certain pages, they are typically more than eager for search engine bots to see the content for free. After all, the more search engines that catalog the info, the better the chances of luring new users.

But the technique, known as cloaking, has a gaping loophole: if Google and other search engines can see the content without entering a password, so can you. Want to read this forum (http://forums.inkdropstyles.com/index.php?showtopic=4227) from the InkDrop Styles website? You can, but first you'll have to enter a user name and password. Or you can simply type "cache:http://forums.inkdropstyles.com/index.php?showtopic=4227" into Google. It leads you to this cache (http://209.85.141.104/search?hl=en&q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fforums.inkdropstyles.com%2Findex.php%3Fshowtopic%3D4227&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f), which shows you the entire thread.

Those in the know have been using the trick for years, but a hacker who goes by the handle Oxy recently made this post (http://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=25040) that shares the technique with the world at large. It reminds us of a similar approach for accessing restricted sites that involves changing a browser's user agent to one used by search engine bots.

The hack is one example of the security problems that result from the practice of cloaking. Robert Hansen, the web security guru and CEO of secTheory (http://sectheory.com/) recently alerted us to the compromised blog (http://www.blakeross.com/) of Blake Ross, the co-founder of the Mozilla Firefox project who recently went to work for Facebook. For more than a month, unknown miscreants have been using his site to host links to sites pushing diet pills and other kinds of drugs.

Thanks the some javascript magic, users who visit the site never see evidence of the compromise, i.e. the links are cloaked. But the image below shows what happens when javascript is disabled.

We've contacted Blake about his website, but haven't yet received a response. Cleaning up the site ought to be as easy as updating his badly out-of-date version of WordPress. Addressing the shadowy world of cloaking will take a bit more work. ®

About My Death Car

My Death Car is for now, simply a blog. This blog really wants to set itself apart from other music blogs. For starters, this blog really just wants to shut up and give you music. That alone sets itself apart from the many convoluted egos of the blogosphere. Most of us Death Cars are artists who respect music as an art, not as a fad, or a list of lists to set us apart on social networks. Music guides our work. We understand it as a process of creation much like our own and, because of that, we give back to music the same way we give back to our art: by promoting its growth by sharing it with our community.

What is a Death Car?

The Death Car is the bodily vessel which takes us past this life and into the next. My death car has the music up really loud...

If it is too loud or if you are a pissed copyright holder, understand that I only wish to emblazon a further passion for artists and their art. Ultimately, my intent is to support artists, not cheat them. If you are still pissed, contact me and I will remove it asap.

The Death Car is also supposedly a van in china that takes organs from the freshly deceased. That only somewhat pertains to us...
